Technical Director

Heading into our 17th season, Constellation Theatre Company (CTC) seeks a qualified Technical Director to support the company as we launch into our next season. Constellation is in a period of transformation: growing our staff, expanding our company, and exploring new performance venues. This person will play a key role in our success.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take the Scenic Designers’ drawings and use as a plan for build;

  • Help Production Manager to cost out the design and ensure that the production remains in budget;

  • Purchase and pick up materials for build as necessary (using a company card);

  • Build all scenic elements of the production;

  • Manage the logistics of the scene shop as a multi-use space for build, paints, and rehearsals;

  • Meet regularly with Production Manager and other department heads as the production process occurs;

  • Load in and out the scenery from multiple spaces including but not limited to the rehearsal space, scene shop, and theatre venue;

  • Install the scenery in the theatre space;

  • Strike the scenery and restore the theatre space to standard conditions;

  • Lead overhire crew during the load in and load out / strike calls;

  • Participate in staff activities and training;

  • Maintain facility tools, upgrades, inventories, and more;

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Candidates for this position will possess:

  • A minimum of 3 years professional experience as a Technical Director; 

  • Thorough knowledge of most areas of theatrical production, carpentry, and theatrical scenery;

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and work within approved budget;

  • Thorough knowledge of power tool usage and maintenance;

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in CAD programs and Microsoft Office Suite;

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and gather/analyze information skillfully;

  • Ability to work well in group problem-solving situations;

  • Ability to work under pressure on multiple projects and work with people of varying experience levels;

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs. alone in some circumstances, but shared lift in others;

  • Comfortability working on ladders and at heights;

  • Strong communication, diplomatic and leadership skills;

  • Willingness to be flexible, collaborative, highly motivated, organized and responsible;

  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

 

Compensation

  • Salary begins at $45,000. Negotiable and commensurate with experience.

  • Constellation Theatre Company offers competitive benefits to its full-time employees including health and dental insurance, 20 vacation days, 13 federal holidays and flexible work schedules.

  • Hours are full-time (generally Monday – Friday during the day) with evening and weekend hours as required based on the production schedule.

It is metro-accessible and the neighborhood offers grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, a variety of fitness centers, great restaurants, and live music and theatre venues all within walking distance.
