We spark curiosity and imagination by showcasing diverse stories from all over the world that reveal the vast range of human experience.  Our shows feature visual spectacle, live music, dynamic movement and passionate acting ensembles.

We offer a hybrid work model with flexibility in scheduling and location.  Activities involving artists and patrons call for in-person attendance, sometimes on nights and weekends.  Our theatre and office space is at Source 1835 14th St. NW Washington, DC. It is metro-accessible and the neighborhood offers grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, a variety of fitness centers, great restaurants, and live music and theatre venues all within walking distance.

Managing Director

REPORTS TO: Artistic Director 

JOB TYPE: Full Time, Exempt

Celebrating its 15th Anniversary season, Constellation Theatre Company seeks an experienced Managing Director to support and lead the company as we launch into our next chapter. 

 

Essential Duties 

 

Collaborate 

  • Envision, organize and implement high level organizational strategy in collaboration with Artistic Director and Board of Directors. 

  • Work with the Artistic Director and staff to ensure all activities, programs and processes are in line with the company’s core values and safety protocols. 

  • Create fundraising campaigns with the Director of Development. 

  • Develop strategy and execution of communications with the Marketing Manager. 

 

Lead 

  • Serve as chief financial officer, handling payroll and accounts payable etc.   

  • Establish box office strategy and oversee Patron Services Manager.  

  • Analyze data to determine Constellation’s impact and sustainability. 

  • Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, paid staff or volunteers. 

  • Foster a climate that attracts, keeps and motivates a diverse company of talented individuals. 

  • Serve on the Board of Directors as an ex-officio member.  

 

Administer 

  • Provide financial management & oversight, including reports for the Board of Directors. 

  • Create budgets, track actuals and forecast cashflow and revenue.  

  • Manage human resources, including benefits and insurance. 

  • Support and oversee contracting and book-keeping responsibilities. 

  • Maintain official record and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 

  • Provide information for grant writing and reporting.   

 

Engage 

  • Participate in capacity building and arts management programs. 

  • Represent and advocate for Constellation within the Greater Washington DC community. 

  • Interact with patrons, donors, and artists at events, performances and other gatherings.  

 

The successful candidate will be 

  • an experienced professional with 5-7 years of experience in arts management/administration; 

  • a strong leader who is a self-starter and can build a motivated team of professionals and volunteers; 

  • a hands-on director with excellent verbal, written, organizational and intrapersonal skills; and 

  • a creative, energetic individual who is committed to realizing the vision of Constellation Theatre Company. 

 

Candidates for this position will possess: 

  • A background in theatre or experience working with a performing arts organization; 

  • Analytical skills and the ability to offer creative solutions;  

  • The ability to properly prepare for and meet deadlines;  

  • Demonstrated attention to detail; 

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google software;  

  • Proficiency in CRM software, specifically Salesforce/ Patron Manager a plus,  

  • Experience with Quickbooks, Bill.com, Asana a plus; and

  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors in order to secure leadership gifts.

  • Organize and implement multi-faceted fundraising campaigns.

  • Research and cultivate donor prospects.

 

Grants

  • Administer and collaborate on writing grants.

  • Research additional foundation, government and corporate funding opportunities.

 

Special Events

  • Create and manage special events.

  • Engage with donors at events, performances and other gatherings.

 

Board

  • Develop and maintain relationships with the Board of Directors. 

  • Regularly report progress to Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors.

 

The successful candidate will be

  • an experienced professional with a proven track record in development and major gifts solicitation for a non-profit organization;

  • a person with superior verbal and written communication skills;

  • excited and enthusiastic about theatre and the performing arts;

  • able to work both independently and as part of a team;

Essential Duties 

  • Create institutional and show-specific marketing materials; 

  • Uphold a consistent visual brand and company voice across all mediums; 

  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Managing Director on marketing and PR strategy; 

  • Design season brochures, posters, postcards, playbills, ads, and mailing collateral; 

  • Improve, maintain and make routine updates to Constellation’s website;  

  • Design and implement email campaigns;  

  • Generate 4-6 weekly social media posts and foster online engagement; 

  • Create and edit original graphics for use across a wide array of company communications; 

  • Film and edit in-house promotional videos; 

  • Coordinate promotional photoshoots and production photos; 

  • Manage and coordinate work with outside art services and printers to meet deadlines of deliverables; 

  • Place ads in print and online and negotiate advertising contracts;

  • an experienced professional with a proven track record in content creation; 

  • an individual with a great eye and compelling design aesthetic;
