Originally based on a low-budget 1960 black comedy film, Menken and Ashman’s stage adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors premiered in 1982 at the Workshop of the Players' Art Theatre, an intimate Off-Off-Broadway venue not unlike the 100-seat black box at Source.The show quickly became one of the most popular musical comedies of all time,spawning celebrated productions across the country including a 1986 film by Frank Oz and a 2003 Broadway run starring Hunter Foster and Kerry Butler. An off-Broadway revival is slated to begin previews in New York in September 2019.

THE ENSEMBLE

• Two-time Helen Hayes Award nominee and frequent Constellation scene-stealer Christian Montgomery (The Wild Party, Urinetown, Avenue Q) stars as our unlikely hero Seymour, a mild-mannered flower shop assistant with a penchant for exotic plants.

• Teresa Quigley Danskey (GALA Hispanic Theatre: Fame the Musical) makes her Constellation debut as Seymour’s warm-hearted coworker Audrey, who dreams of a better life far from Skid Row.

• Powerhouse performer Marty Austin Lamar (Signature Theatre: Spunk) lends his soulful, commanding voice to the bloodthirsty Audrey II, while puppeteer Rj Pavel (Constellation: Avenue Q) gives movement to the plant’s physical form.

• A trio of street urchins – Selena Clyne-Galindo (Keegan Theatre: Legally Blonde), Alana S. Thomas (GALA Hispanic Theatre: Fame the Musical), and Chani Wereley (Constellation: Aida) – supplies commentary, wisdom, and ample sass throughout the show.

• Scott Ward Abernethy, last seen at Constellation as the Devil in The Master and Margarita, plays Audrey’s boyfriend Orin, a dentist who takes sadistic pleasure in torturing his patients.

• Robert John Biedermann (Riverside Center for the Performing Arts: South Pacific) makes his Constellation debut as Mushnik, the flower shop’s ornery owner.

THE CREATIVE TEAM

• Constellation Artistic Associate Nick Martin, winner of the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Direction in a Play for last season’s Melancholy Play: A Contemporary Farce, takes the reins of this delectably outrageous show.

• Matthew Aldwin McGee, who created the oversized dinosaur and woolly mammoth puppets for 2018’s The Skin of Our Teeth, will design four original Audrey II puppets ranging in size from an adorable pod to a six-foot, man-devouring monster.

• Helen Hayes Award-winning Music Director Walter “Bobby” McCoy (The Wild Party, Aida) leads a live seven-piece band for Little Shop’s energetic score, featuring such hummable songs as “Suddenly Seymour” and “Feed Me (Git It).”

• Ilona Kessell, nominated for Helen Hayes Awards for both Urinetown and The Wild Party at Constellation, serves as Choreographer.

• Rounding out the creative team are Frank Labovitz (Costume Designer), A.J. Guban (Scenic Designer), Sarah Tundermann (Lighting Designer), Justin Schmitz (Sound Designer), Alexander Rothschild (Properties Designer), and Lorraine Resseger-Slone (Fight Choreographer).
